The use of sealant is necessary on the crankcase halves and the rocker cover of Honda XL250, XR250, XL500 and XR500 until 1982.
Then, to make it easy the reassembly, Honda delivered seals coated with seal tabs starting from 1983 models.

The use of sealant is always beneficial except for cylinder head gasket.
Please note that the adaptable/pattern gaskets most of the time do not have sealant like the original Honda ones. It's up to you to apply a thin sealant.
