For chains with O-rings, they should not be cleaned with gasoline or even diesel oil. Indeed it is very fluid, too, and would dilute the grease trapped between the axles and the rollers. This is where there is the most constraint. The O-rings being there to preserve the original grease.
If you dilute this grease, the new grease will not be able to go there because of the O-rings.
Conclusion, we grease a chain with O-rings to not make a noise of scrap metal but not hoping to be able to grease the inside of the axes.
